Youth & Teen Programs
What is Geocaching?
Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to hide and seek containers (geocaches) all over the world. There are over 1 million registered geocaches worldwide. GeoVentures, Inc. designs temporary geocaching courses for programming purposes. These courses can be established in almost any place.
Create a Connection with Youth
When introducing participants, especially youth, to geocaching, the one thing we always notice is an immediate fascination with the GPS units. Kids develop a connection to the world around them when they realize that the GPS in their hands is actually receiving a signal from satellites orbiting the Earth. They look up at the sky and imagine what the satellites look like and and become empowered by the hi-tech mission that is ahead of them. The GeoVentures have even greater, lifelong benefits – it develops critical and creative thinking; encourages teamwork, respecting and valuing others’ abilities and contributions; but most importantly . . . it gets them back outside and active.
Make a Lifelong Impact
The enthusiasm and exploration will not stop when the program ends. Participants will be able to teach their families and friends the basics of geocaching, and with over 1 million official geocaches available worldwide, families can travel together seeking them out. From the neighborhood park to the state forest to a courtyard in a major metropolitan area, the caches are out there; you just need to go find them. It’s okay with us if the child does not stick with geocaching, but now that we have gotten them outside they will be more likely to try out another outdoor activity – hiking, camping, kayaking, biking, disc golf – it does not matter as long as they are outdoors and enjoying themselves.
Geocaching is not just an activity; it is a catalyst for a new lifestyle. GeoVentures’ vision is to provide programs that excite young people and motivate them to continue their outdoor adventures, whatever they may be, as part of a healthier lifestyle.
